Description of Measure
Items from the Routine Activities measure were drawn from the "Monitoring the Future Questionnaire" (Osgood, Wilson, O'Malley, Bachman, & Johnston, 1996) and are used to assess the frequency of unstructured socializing. Items specifically tap activities that occur in the absence of an authority figure (e.g., "How often did you get together with friends informally?"). The scale contains 3 items to which participants respond on a 5 - point Likert scale ranging from "Never" to "Almost every day". Higher scores indicate a greater involvement in unstructured activities. A fourth item is asked to specify the number of evenings in a typical week the participant spends on "fun" activities. Items were previously scored independently without an "unstructured socializing" total score (Osgood, et al., 1996); however, a combined score was created for the purpose of this study.
The Routine Activities measure was found to have adequate internal consistency at the baseline time-point (alpha = .62). Confirmatory factor analysis produces the following values: NFI and NNFI: .996 and .998 respectively, CFI: .999 and RMSEA: .012. This measure was also found to have adequate internal consistency at the follow-up time points (6 month alpha = .73; 12 month alpha = .70; 18 month alpha = .70; 24 month alpha = .68).
Computed score:
- unsupervised routine activities [S#ROUT]; the mean of all four questions. Data must be contained in three of the four items in order to receive a computed mean.
Data Issues
- This measure are skipped if the subject spent the entire recall period in a facility. This is automatically determined by programming code by looking at the location types listed in the living calendar. "Locked up" is defined as being in locations of types 6 (secure facility), 8 (RTC), 9 (medical hospital) and 10 (psychiatric hospital) for all months of the recall period.
- For 86 cases across all follow-up time-points, the subject spent the entire recall period in an institution, but a programming bug caused the subject to receive the neighborhood questions. For these cases, we have removed all data from this measure and inserted a missing value code indicating the subject did not skip into the measure.
- Item s#rout5 (how often hang out in the streets) was added to the interview in version 01.16. Data for this variable is available beginning with the follow24 interview. This item is not used in the computation of any summary scores.
- Item s#rout6 (hours/week spent doing all activities) was added to the interview in version 01.16 and then removed with the release of version 01.17. This item is not used in the computation of any summary scores.
- Item s#rout7 (how often go to the bar/nightclub) was added to the interview in version 01.17. Data is available beginning with the follow30 timepoint. This item is not used in the computation of any summary scores.
- Items S#Rout5, S#Rout6 and S#Rout7 are all skipped if the subject was under the age of 18 at the time of the interview.
- Some cases are missing data for this measure as a result of a bug in the programming code. Cases with this issue are noted with a missing value code of -700.
