Description of Measure
The Interview Information section is comprised of variables that describe the basic facts related to when and where the research interview was completed. We include information such:
- The date of the interview [S#QStadat]
- Interview location [S#IntLoc], [S#PlcCod], [S#PlcType], (e.g., institution and if so, the type of institution, public place).
Four additional bits of information are available and these require more explanation:
- Version number in which the interview was conducted; [S#QVersion]. Over the course of the data collection period, the study working group made changes to the wording and/or interview content which sometimes required a programming change. Such changes required the release of a new "version" of the interview. In particular, many changes occurred in version 01.16 when we changed the orientation of the interview to include questions/constructs that were more applicable to young emerging adults than teenagers. The implication is that some information that is available in interviews conducted in later versions may not be available in earlier versions of the interview. We refer to this issue as a "version issue" in the calendar documentation.
- Interview completion status (S#IntCompStat). A variable which indicates whether the follow-up interview was completed, missed or partially completed.
- Number of recall months; [S#NMonths]. A variable which indicates the number of months that are covered in the interview. This information is important because of variability in the time covered in any given follow-up interview. Our general operating rule for the study was to conduct interviews in exact six month increments; however, the reality is that this is not possible. As a result, the study adopted a range of time during which it was acceptable for an interview to be conducted. This range stated six weeks prior to the "target date" (the exact six month point set based on the date of the baseline interview) and continued until eight weeks after the target date. We call this range of months the "window of opportunity". If an interview could not be conducted within the window of opportunity, that particular follow-up was considered "missed". This operational rule leads to variability in the number of months covered in the recall period for a given interview. For example, if the previous interview was conducted early in the "window of opportunity" and the current interview is conducted late in that period, a person could reach the maximum of eight months covered in the recall period. In contrast, if the previous interview is conducted early, the recall period could cover five months. The maximum number of months covered in interviews through 36 months is eight, and the maximum number of months covered in interviews from 48 - 84 months is 14.
Another study operational and programming rule impacts the number of recall months. If the interview was conducted between the 1st and 15th of a given month, the recall period ended with the previous month. However, if the interview was conducted from the 16th through the end of the month, the recall period ended in the current month.
- Number of days in the recall period; [S#DaysInRP]. As with the number of months in the recall period, there is variability in the number of days in the recall period. Number of days is based on the number of months covered, as defined above.
