Description of Measure
The Substance Use/Abuse Inventory is a modified version of a substance use measure developed by Chassin et al., 1991 for use in a study of children of alcoholics. In the release interview, this measure considers the adolescent's use of alcohol and drug use during their stay (marijuana, inhalants and other drugs) as well as the frequency at which they observed other residents at the facility using these drugs.
Two scores are computed:
- Average frequency of subject substance use [r0subuse]; mean of four items
- Average frequency of subject exposure to substance use [r0subuse_see]; mean of four items
The following individual items are also available:
- Frequency of seeing other residents selling drugs [r0sub05a]
- Frequency of the subject selling drugs [r0sub05b]
Data Issues
- Starting with version 01.19 of the interview, all items in this measure were skipped if the release interview was conducted in a federal facility.
- Two cases (ID 53091 and 51331) are missing data for all items in this measure, due to an error in the interview programming code.
