Description of Measure
The Substance Use/Abuse Inventory is a modified version of a substance use measure developed by Chassin et al., 1991 for use in a study of children of alcoholics. This measure considers the adolescent's use of illegal drugs and alcohol over the recall period. The self-report measure is comprised of the following subscales: Substance Use (e.g., "How often have you had alcohol to drink?") and Social Consequences, Dependency & Treatment (e.g., "Have you had problems or arguments with family or friends before because of your alcohol or drug use?"/ "Have you wanted a drink or drugs so badly that you could not think of about anything else?").
Substance Use
- Alcohol - 1 item assesses alcohol use in the recall period. If positively endorsed - 4 questions follow that further assess heavy drinking and past 6-month alcohol use.
- Illegal Drugs -the frequency of use in 10 different drug categories over the recall period is assessed. If use in the recall period is endorsed - subject is asked about use in the past 24 hours. If use in past 24 hours endorsed - Subject identifies the drug(s) used.
- Smoking - 1 item assesses smoking. If positively endorsed, 3 questions follow that assess smoking amount and frequency.
Social Consequences, Dependency & Treatment
- Social Consequences - 17 items assess social consequences in the recall period. If consequences endorsed in the recall period - subject is asked to attribute problems to drugs, alcohol or both.
- Dependency - 10 items assess dependency in the recall period. If dependency items are endorsed for the recall period - subject is asked to attribute dependency problems to drugs, alcohol or both.
- Treatment - 4 items assess involvement in treatment in the recall period. If treatment in the recall period - subject is asked to attribute dependency problems to drugs, alcohol or both.
Twelve scores are computed:
- Quantity/Frequency of alcohol use - recall period [S#QFBRMO]; frequency times quantity
- Number of drugs used in the recall period [S#6MOUSE]; count of endorsed items
- Quantity/Frequency of cigarette use in the recall period [S#QFSMK6]
- Recall period Alcohol Consequences [S#A6SC2]; count of social consequences in the recall period attributed to alcohol
- Recall period Drug Consequences [S#D6SC2]; count of social consequences in the recall period and attributed to drugs
- Recall period Alcohol Dependence Symptoms [S#A6DP2]; count of symptoms in the recall period attributed to alcohol use
- Recall period Drug Dependence Symptoms [S#D6DP2]; count of symptoms in the recall period attributed to drug use
- Recall period Total Substance Use Consequences [S#TOTSC6]; count of consequences in the recall period attributed to either drugs or alcohol
- Recall period Total Substance Use Dependency Symptoms [S#TOTDS6]; count of dependency symptoms attributed to drugs or alcohol that have occurred in the recall period
- Recall period Alcohol Treatment [S#ALTRTM]
- Recall period Drug Treatment [S#DGTRTM]
- Recall period Alcohol or Drug Treatment [S#TRTM]
The following individual items are also available:
- How often had alcohol to drink in recall period [S#SubUse1]
- Number alcoholic drinks usually consumed [S#SubUse2]
- How often had 5+ drinks at one time in recall period [S#SubUse3]
- Number of times been drunk on alcohol during recall period [S#SubUse4]
- Number of times used marijuana/hashish during recall period [S#SubUse6]
- Number of times used sedative/tranquilizers during recall period [S#SubUse8]
- Number of times used stimulants/amphetamines during recall period [S#SubUse10]
- Number of times used cocaine during recall period [S#SubUse12]
- Number of times used opiates during recall period [S#SubUse14]
- Number of times used ecstasy during recall period [S#SubUse16]
- Number of times used hallucinogens during recall period [S#SubUse18]
- Number of times used inhalants during recall period [S#SubUse20]
- Number of times used amyl nitrate/odorizers/rush during recall period [S#SubUse22]
- Used other drugs during recall period [Y/N] [S#SubUse24]
- Number of times used other drugs during recall period [S#SubUse26]
- Number of times abused prescribed medications (own or someone elses) during recall period [S#SubUse28]
- Number of times smoked cigarettes during recall period [S#SubUse30]
- Number cigarettes smoke per day during recall period [S#SubUse31]
Data Issues
- Starting at the 48 month time point and later, value options are changed for certain items to correspond with the interview having a longer recall period. These items include all questions that ask 'How many time have you...' or 'How often have you...' (used alcohol, marijuana, stimulants, etc). For follow06 through follow36, options 2 and 3 are '1-2 times' and '3-5 times' respectively. Starting with follow48 and later, options 2 and 3 change to '1-5 times' and '6-11 times' respectively.
- Beginning with version 01.19, this measure is skipped if the interview is being conducted in a federal facility. The first interview with this new logic was completed in the follow36 timepoint.
- All consequences, dependency and treatment individual items are skipped if the subject used neither drugs nor alcohol during the recall period.
- Follow36 CaseID 55062, and Follow48 CaseID's 04440, 52897, 52974 and 53085 are missing this measure because the interviewer mistakenly indicated the subject was in a federal prison.
