Description of Measure
The Youths Parenting Orientation scale was adapted for this study from Silverberg and Steinberg's (1990) subscale of Adult Role Orientation. This scale is used to assess the collateral's interpretation of the participant's view of their role as a parent (e.g., "Parenting takes up more of X's time than he/she would really like it to"). Only a subset of the six items asked of the subject are asked of the collateral (the externalized items). The inventory in this interview is limited to 3-items for which the collateral is asked to rate their degree of agreement on a scale of 1 - 4 (1= Agree Strongly to 4= Disagree Strongly). Higher scores indicate greater parent orientation.
One score is computed from this measure:
- Youth Parenting Orientation [c0parent]; mean of three items. Data is required in all three items in order to receive a computed score.
Data Issues
- Only a subset of the six items asked at the subject baseline interview are asked at the collateral baseline interview; therefore, the collateral scale is computed as a mean of three items, while the subject scale uses six items.
- All items in this measure are skipped if the subject does not have any children.
