Description of Measure
The motivation to succeed items are taken from Eccles et al. (1998). Two items regarding how far the collateral would like the subject to go in school and how far they think they will go in school are included. An additional item rates the collateral's perception of how far the subject would like go to in school. These are treated as individual items.
The following individual items are available:
- How far do you think the subject would like to go in school [C0_SchAsp1]
- How far would you like the subject to go in school [C0_SchAsp2]
- How far do you think the subject will go in school [C0_SchAsp3]
Data Issues
The collateral version of this measure includes only a subset of the questions that are asked at the subject baseline and follow-ups. The subject measures include six items that assess the opportunities available to the subject in his/her neighborhood regarding schooling and work, as well as an overall 'motivation to succeed' score computed from these items. These are not available for the collateral measure.
