Description of Measure
This section contains items which are descriptive characteristics of the subject. Areas covered include: family structure, ethnicity, subject age, gender, address and household composition, history of running away and site location. A census tract number based on 2000 Census data is also available for the subject's self-reported home address at the time of the baseline interview.
Generally, items included in this section of the codebook are left as individual items. However, there are several computed variables based on these items.
- Family structure [s0famstr]; indicates the combination of parental figures living with the subject
- Biological parents in the household [s0nbphom]; count of biological parents living with the subject
- Number of adults in the household based on the relationship code of each person [s0adults]
- Ethnicity [s0ethcty]; subject's self-reported ethnicity based on items dem21 and dem24. Six ethnic groups result: white, black, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, Other
- Recoded ethnicity [s0ethn_r]; self-reported ethnicity collapsed into 4 groups: white, black, hispanic and other. This collapse was done because of low frequencies in the Asian, Native American and Other group
- Subject's age at the time of the interview (Two age variables are available: [s0age]; interview date minus the subject's DOB truncated to a whole number and [s0ctage]; interview date minus the subject's DOB as a continuous variable)
- Site [s0site]; represents the location of the subject - Philadelphia (site=1) or Phoenix (site =2). The variable is computed based on the study ID. Study IDs which are less than 49,999 represent subjects from Philadelphia while study ID's of 50,000 or greater represent subjects from Phoenix

Data Issues
- There is one subject included in the study at the baseline interview who was 19 years of age (5748). The date of birth for this subject is correct.
- Census tract information is unavailable for 27 cases. The self-reported home address for 19 cases could not be geo-coded; the remaining eight cases were not coded because they were not PA or AZ residents at the time of the interview.
