Description of Measure
This section contains a series of items which are descriptive characteristics of both the subject as well as the collateral reporter. Areas covering the collateral reporter include: ethnicity, gender, relationship to the subject, and country of birth. Areas covering the subject include: whether the subject has children and if so, do they provide financial support for them, history of running away, and number of people living in their home.
Generally, items included in this section of the codebook are left as individual items. However, there are several computed variables based on these items.
- Collateral ethnicity [c0ethcty]; collateral's self-reported ethnicity based on items C0_CRace and C0_CHisp. Six ethnic groups result: white, black, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, Other.
- Recoded collateral ethnicity [c0ethn_r]; self-reported ethnicity collapsed into four groups: white, black, hispanic and other. This collapse was done because of low frequencies in the Asian, Native American and Other group.
- Site [c0site]; represents the location of the subject - Philadelphia (site = 1) or Phoenix (site = 2). The variable is computed based on the study ID. Study IDs which are less than 49,999 represent subjects from Philadelphia while study IDs of 50,000 or greater represent subjects from Phoenix.
The following items relating to the collateral reporter are also available for this measure:
- Collateral gender [C0CGend]
- Relationship to the subject [C0_ColRel]
- Collateral country of birth [C0_CBorn]
- Specific country of birth, if not the United States [C0_CBornO]
The following items relating to the subject based on the collateral report are available for this measure:
- Number of residents that live at subject home address [C0_Rel117b]
- Whether the subject has any children [C0Children]
- Financial role subject plays in their child's life [C0_PCLc86]
- Whether the subject has ever run away from home [C0_Rel149]
- Number of times subject has run away [C0_Rel150]
- Subject age the first time they ran away [C0_Rel151]
Data Issues
Due to data issues with both the collateral date of birth and the interview start date, collateral age cannot be computed for the collateral baseline or follow-up time-points.
