Description of Measure
The Community Involvement scale (Elliot, 1990) was modified for this study to assess the adolescent's involvement in structured community activities. Scores indicate the extent of the adolescent's involvement in four different community organizations (e.g., sports teams, scouts, church related groups, and volunteer work).
The following score is calculated:
- Involvement in community activities [S#com6mo]; count of endorsed activities, independent of the recency of involvement.
This scale can range from 0 through 4, with higher scores on these scales indicating more community involvement.
Data Issues
- This measure are skipped if the subject spent the entire recall period in a facility. This is automatically determined by programming code by looking at the location types listed in the living calendar. "Locked up" is defined as being in locations of types 6 (secure facility), 8 (RTC), 9 (medical hospital) and 10 (psychiatric hospital) for all months of the recall period.
- For 86 cases across all follow-up time-points, the subject spent the entire recall period in an institution, but a programming bug caused the subject to receive the neighborhood questions. For these cases, we have removed all data from this measure and inserted a missing value code indicating the subject did not skip into the measure.
- Two items (S#ComInv_ComPol - participate in any political organizations; and S#ComInv_ComSSG - participate in any other social service groups or organizations that we did not already mention) were added to the interview in version 01.16. Data for these variables will be available beginning with the follow24 timepoin. These are left as individual items and are not used in the computation of any summary scores. Additionally, these questions are only asked if the subject was under age 18 at the time of the interview.
- Item S#ComIn23 (How long ago did you do volunteer work) was dropped from the interview in version 01.16 and replaced with S#ComIn24 (How long ago did you do volunteer work) with different value options. Data for S#ComIn23 will be present in the follow06 through follow48 timepoints. Data for S#ComIn4 will be present beginning with the follow24 timepoint. These are left as individual items and are not used in the computation of any summary scores.
- Some cases are missing data for this measure as a result of a bug in the programming code. Cases with this issue are noted with a missing value code of -700.
