Description of Measure
This section contains items which inquire about the criminal activity of family members during the recall period. Family member is defined by the subject and can include non-biological family. The relationship of the person nominated is obtained as well as the living situation for that person (i.e. do they live with the subject).
We compute the following summary variables:
- Marker for biological mother arrested or jailed in the recall period [S#ArrMom]
- Marker for biological father arrested or jailed in the recall period [S#ArrDad]
- Marker for both biological parents arrested or jailed in the recall period [S#ArrBth]
- Count of family members living at the subject's home address involved in crime [S#FCAth]
- Marker for any family member involved in crime that lives at the subject's home address[S#CrimeAtH]
- Relationship of person(s) involved in crime that live at the subject's home address, found in: [S#CrimeAtH_Rel1], [S#CrimeAtH_Rel2], [S#CrimeAtH_Rel3], [S#CrimeAtH_Rel4],[S#CrimeAtH_Rel5]
- Proportion of family members living at the subject's home address involved in crime [S#PCrimeAtH]
- Count of family members living at the subject's home address who were jailed [S#FamJailAtH_count]
- Proportion of family members living at the subject's home address who have been jailed [S#PJailedAtH]
The following individual items are also available:
- Marker for whether any family members were involved in criminal activity during the recall period [S#Demo_FmCrim]
- Relationship of family members involved in crime [S#Demo_FamCrim1_FCRel], [S#Demo_FamCrim2_FCRel], [S#Demo_FamCrim3_FCRel], [S#Demo_FamCrim4_FCRel], [S#Demo_FamCrim5_FCRel]
- Whether each relative was arrested [S#Demo_FamCrim1_FCArr], [S#Demo_FamCrim2_FCArr], [S#Demo_FamCrim3_FCArr], [S#Demo_FamCrim4_FCArr], [S#Demo_FamCrim5_FCArr]
- Whether each relative was jailed [S#Demo_FamCrim1_FCJai], [S#Demo_FamCrim2_FCJai], [S#Demo_FamCrim3_FCJai], [S#Demo_FamCrim4_FCJai], [S#Demo_FamCrim5_FCJai]
- Whether each relative lives at the subject's home address [S#Demo_FamCrim1_FCAtH], [S#Demo_FamCrim2_FCAtH], [S#Demo_FamCrim3_FCAtH], [S#Demo_FamCrim4_FCAtH], [S#Demo_FamCrim5_FCAtH]
Data Issues
- Summary scores characterizing family involvement in crime are only computed if the subject spent at least half of the recall period in the community.
- If the subject had at least one family member involved in crime in the recall period (FCCrim = yes), they receive the measure. Follow-up questions as about up to five different family members. Once the subject chooses 97 (NA) for FCRel (relationship of family member), they will not receive any additional follow-up questions (i.e., if FamCrim2_FCRel = 97, then all questions for relatives 3-5 are skipped; if FamCrim3_FCRel = 97, then follow-ups for relatives 4-5 are skipped, etc.).
- Item FCJai (was family member x jailed) is only asked if that family member was arrested (FCArr).
- Some cases are missing data for this measure as a result of a bug in the programming code. Cases with this issue are noted with a missing value code of -700.
