Description of Measure
This section of the codebook includes items from eight areas within the interview that describe aspects of the adolescent's family situation. Specifically, we are including items here that describe the biological parent's generational status, the native language of the biological parents, educational attainment for parents (refers to parents they live with and is not limited to biological parents), employment status of parents (refers to parents they live with and is not limited to biological parents), presence of siblings in the household, criminal history of family members, the history of mental health hospitalization of family members, and a description of the relationship with parents (not limited to biological) while growing up.
Parental occupation was created using a seven-point scale ranging from 1 (unskilled employees) to 7 (major professionals) based on Hollingshead's occupational index (see Hollingshead, 1957).
We compute the following summary variables:
- A marker when biological mother has been arrested and/or jailed [s0arrmom]

- Proportion of family members that have been arrested and/or jailed and also live at the subject's home address [S0PCrimeAth]
- A marker when biological father has been in a mental hospital [s0dad_mh]
- A marker when biological mother has been in a mental hospital [s0mom_mh]
- A marker when either biological mother or father has been in a mental hospital [s0MHbiopar]
- A marker indicating if biological mom had past or current drug problem [s0mom_drug]

- A marker indicating if biological mom had a past alcohol problem [s0mompastalc]
- A marker indicating if biological mom has a current alcohol problem [s0momcurrentalc]
- A marker for presence or absence of both past and current alcohol problems for bio mom [s0momalcstat]
- A marker for combining past and current drug and alcohol problems for bio mom [s0mom_substance]
- Number of family members that have been in a mental hospital [s0num_mh]

Data Issues
- There is a lot of missing data regarding the biological father; therefore, many of the substance markers are not available for the biological father.
- Computed items for relatives that have been arrested and/or jailed and live at the subject's home address are computed differently at baseline and follow-ups. These items are not computed at follow-ups if the subject spent more than half of the recall period in an institutional setting. At baseline there is no threshold for how long they had to be living at the home address for them to receive a computed score.
