Description of Measure
This section of the codebook includes items from eight areas within the interview that describe aspects of the adolescent's family situation according to the collateral report. Specifically, we are including items here that describe the biological parent's generational status, the native language of the biological parents, educational attainment for parents (refers to parents they live with and is not limited to biological parents), employment status of parents (refers to parents they live with and is not limited to biological parents), presence of siblings in the household, criminal history of family members, the history of mental health hospitalization of family members, the history of substance use of family members.
Parental occupation was created using a seven-point scale ranging from 1 (unskilled employees) to 7 (major professionals) based on Hollingshead's occupational index (see Hollingshead, 1957).
We compute the following variables:

Data Issues
- There is a lot of missing data regarding the biological father's substance use at the subject baseline; therefore, many of the substance markers are not available for the biological father at the subject baseline interview. This data is, however, available at the collateral interview so these scores have been computed.
- In the section regarding family history of drug/alcohol problems, the item DispFDA (was this a problem with drugs, alcohol, or both) was added to the interview in version 01.04.
- In the subject baseline interview, a history of mental hospitalization is obtained for a maximum of five family members. In the collateral baseline, an error in the interview programming code limited this to four family members.
